Rationale and Background

In an era where the world is facing multidimensional challenges—including food security, climate change, rapidly changing consumer demands, and limited agricultural resources—the global society is turning its attention toward the development of high-quality, safe, and innovative foods that better meet the needs of modern consumers.

Thailand, as an agricultural country with advantages in biological resources, particularly in horticultural production such as vegetables, fruits, herbs, and economic crops, has high potential to step up as a leader in agricultural and food innovation at the regional and global levels. Therefore, driving towards this goal requires personnel with comprehensive knowledge and skills, covering everything from quality crop production processes to research, development, and processing into high-value-added food products.

From this context, the Faculty of Agricultural Technology at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang has developed a dual-degree program in Horticultural Innovation and Food Science and Technology to produce a new generation of graduates with high potential to systematically integrate the knowledge of both disciplines.

The curriculum focuses on enabling learners to understand the entire production process from upstream to downstream, including strain selection, on-farm production, post-harvest management, and yield quality enhancement, all the way to the design, development, and research of new food products that meet health, functional, and modern marketing demands.

This curriculum responds to the national policy of promoting the agricultural and food industry as one of the targeted S-Curve industries driving the economy, by producing graduates with the ability to think analytically, conduct research, and apply innovations in actual industrial or commercial settings. It also provides students with opportunities to learn through internships in real workplaces, international exchange programs, and the building of cooperative networks with entrepreneurs, researchers, and related industrial sectors.
